Top Ten Tuesday

This is a neat weekly feature over at a blog I really enjoy, The Broke and the Bookish.  They read books similar to some that I've been reviewing, and they're fun and they write well.  Totally worth checking out!

Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2014

1. Megan Shepherd, author of The Madman's DaughterHer Dark Curiosity, and The Cold Legacy.  I totally fangirl over these books all the time and am always telling people to read them.  And I've now had two opportunities to see Megan Shepherd at author events and she's a pretty cool gal.

2. Claudia Gray, author of A Thousand Pieces of You.  Again, so good that I immediately handed it to a coworker after reading it, and told her that she must also read it.  It's going to be so hard to wait for the second book in the trilogy!

3. Warren Adler, author of Trans-Siberian Express.  I loved this book so much more than I expected!  I might be gifting this one to my dad soon, and will be reading more Warren Adler in the future.

4. Liane Moriarty, author of The Husband's Secret.  Once I got to about the halfway point I had to ignore all my other obligations until I finished it.

5. Sue Monk Kidd, author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings.  I can't believe I didn't read her sooner!  I LOVED The Secret Life of Bees.  I'm a sucker for books set in SC.

6. Ransom Riggs, author of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Hollow City.  I totally missed all the buzz when Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children first came out, so I got to read the two books back-to-back.  I think I would've read them sooner if someone had told me about the photographs!

7. R.C. Lewis, the author of Stitching Snow.  This book was so good that I immediately handed the ARC to a coworker after reading it, and told her that she must also read it.

8. Erika Robuck, author of Hemingway's Girl.  I loved this book!  After reading it, I immediately gave my copy to my sister-in-love to read, and she's going to pass it on to our mother-in-love after that!

9. Neal Shusterman, author of Unwind.  This was so good!  Dark, but good.  I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this trilogy in 2015.

10. Francesca Lia Block, author of Teen Spirit, Weetzie Bat, Witch Baby, Cherokee Bat and the Goat Guys, Missing Angel Juan, Baby Be-Bop, and Dangerous Angels.  This one is a "sorta."  I did not care for Teen Spirit, but was encouraged to try the Weetzie Bat books and I'm so glad I did!  They're totally different from Teen Spirit.

What about you?  What new-to-you authors did you discover this year?  I love reading others' TTT, so please leave a comment with a link!

  1. Oh wow! A Thousand Pieces of You and The Madman's Daughter are on my TBR spreadsheet. I've been wanting to read them ever since they debuted, and I plan on reading the books as soon as I get my hands on them. I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to read these books. Ok. I'm good now. Some authors on my list include Allison Pataki, Laini Taylor, Kiera Cass, and Marissa Meyer. I'm excited to expand my collections of many of these authors' books in 2015! Nice picks, Marie:)

  3. Great list. Thanks for checking mine out. I LOVE The Secret Life of Bees and enjoyed The Invention of Wings. If you liked her books, you should check out this book called Saving CeCe Honeycutt- different author but it felt very similar to me to Secret Life--a coming of age in the 1960s. :)

  8. I have Neal Shusterman on my list too! I really need to pick up the next book in the new year for sure!
I read The Husband's Secret this year too but unfortunately did not love it like most people BUT I am still willing to give the author another try. I am pretty sure I have her newest book on my TBR.
Looks like you had a great year of finding some new authors!

  9. Oh gosh, I can't remember the last book I read for a grown up audience so immersed in children and young adult literature I am! I thought Unwind was so gripping! I've read Unwholly, but need to read the last two. My students love them. Thanks for stopping by my TTT

  11. I haven't read any of these books yet - how bad is that?!
I'm hoping to get to The Madman's Daughter, A Thousand Pieces of You and Unwind very soon though.
I love how you have shared a lot of these books with people you know! I don't think I'd be as willing to lend out a copy of a book I loved!

  12. I'm glad to hear you loved AThousand Pieces Of You. I read her vampire series and wasn't that impressed but I'm very intrigued by this book. I think because the cover is so gorgeous haha. But I think I'll be picking it up now :)

  13. My book club really liked The Invention of Wings -- but Sue Monk Kidd wasn't a new author to me, so I couldn't put that on today's list. Lots of other good ideas for me to try!

  14. Obviously I need to read Megan Shepherd as we're likely related somewhere down the line! Seirously though, those books are on my TBR. I also LOVED The Secret Life of Bees but haven't read anything else by Sue Monk Kidd for some reason...

  15. I have both of Sue Monk Kidd's books on my TBR and I so want to read Liane Moriarty too. Sigh! I think I will be able to get to them only in 2015 at this rate!

  16. I'm so glad that you loved Stitching Snow, I was unsure of it before because I love Snow White so I'm always wary that retellings around that fairytale won't be good. Also, I've heard of the Madman's Daughter in passing but didn't realize it was a series- the covers are so eerie looking, I'll have to give it a shot!

Thanks for stopping by Girl in the Pages :)
